This may seem a bit overwhelming, but you are not alone.  Remember you do make a difference. Many parents who started out with reservations have been able to excel as Learning Coaches and their students have flourished at Agora.  What do they have in common? They know the keys to success. By implementing these five keys from the beginning, you will greatly increase your chance of success in our model.  Let’s take a look. At this point, your questions may be more along the lines of ‘How am I going to do this? Let’s start by taking a look at one of the most important and powerful resources available to our families; the Agora.org website. This site is full of resources that you may need at one point or another. Here’s a quick overview of the site.

In a virtual environment, where face-to-face contact is less frequent, finding means of effective communication is crucial.  Agora provides all students with an internal email address and connects them directly to the Learning Coaches preferred email.  In addition to this, our Online Learning System incorporates tools that make connecting to teachers and other staff members a breeze.  Let’s take a look at how email communication works at Agora.

As mentioned before, your student will have live sessions that they will be required to attend in the Blackboard Collaborate tool.
It is important that you have a working knowledge of how to navigate this too.  Here’s a quick tutorial.

Another important program that we use at Agora is called Sapphire.  Sapphire houses report cards, allows you to submit attendance excuses and internet service provider paperwork and K-5 assignments may be completed within this program.  It is vital that you have your account set up as soon as possible.  This quick video will show you how.

As stated, Sapphire will be used to view your student’s attendance as well as to submit an excuse to the Attendance Office. While it may seem obvious that attendance works differently in the virtual world than it does in a traditional setting, it is important that we spend some time discussing just how vital this topic is to your student’s success. This next video contains some eye-opening data and may change how you look at attendance.

In the event of an unavoidable absence from school, you will want to make sure that you submit an excuse as early as possible.  Here’s a quick tutorial on how to do so.

Another one of our Keys to Success and one of your primary jobs as a Learning Coach is monitoring your student’s progress. Checking daily to ensure that work is being completed as well as checking graded assignments to see where your student may need help will be crucial to their continued academic growth. Agora provides each Learning Coach with direct and complete access to all of their student’s work. This tutorial will show you how to take advantage of that access. We hope that by now, you have a much better understanding of your role as the Learning Coach at feel better prepared to fill that role.
While this concludes the formal Learning Coach Orientation, there’s still a great deal of information that assist you as you help your student reach their full academic potential. The Resources and Guides page may be a good place to start exploring.
