Postsecondary Event for Students With Disabilities.

May 8, 2024 11:10 am

Agora is thrilled to host a postsecondary afternoon to explore higher-education options for students with autism or an intellectual disability, on May 30, from noon to 3 p.m. Colleges across Pennsylvania are opening their doors and providing opportunities for all learners to experience college in a meaningful way, while gaining the skills to find meaningful employment.

The event kicks off from noon to 1 p.m., with a dynamic presentation from Think College, whose message of equity and excellence will resonate deeply as they unveil a trove of resources, technical assistance and training aimed at unlocking the doors to higher education. With Think College leading the charge, the path to college becomes not just a dream but a tangible reality for students and families alike.

But there’s more! Join Agora’s breakout sessions from 1 to 2 p.m., where families can explore college programs designed for students with educational disabilities. Representatives from different colleges will share information and answer questions. It’s like a college fair, but with a focus on inclusivity! Here is the list of confirmed colleges attending:

  • Saint Vincent College
  • Penn State Harrisburg
  • East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania
  • Gwynedd Mercy University
  • Millersville University
  • Misericordia University
  • Temple University
  • Joseph’s University
  • Slippery Rock University
  • Lehigh Carbon Community College
  • Community College of Allegheny County

As the event reaches its end, the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) will host a final session from 2 to 3 p.m. They will unveil a variety of support services, from job coaching to funding for college and accommodations. OVR will also share insights into the Hiram G. Andrews Center’s CTI program, a beacon of hope for students seeking technical training and career opportunities.

The day is a celebration of diversity, inclusion and the boundless potential of every student. With 18 colleges offering specialized programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities, Pennsylvania shines brightly as a beacon of inclusivity and opportunity in higher education. Imagine the possibilities—students immersed in the college experience, surrounded by mentors, engaging in social interactions and honing essential career skills. It’s not just education; it’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment!

As we eagerly anticipate the event, let’s not forget the bigger picture. This isn’t just about one event. It’s about laying the groundwork for a future where inclusive college fairs are the norm. It’s about championing accessibility and equity in education, ensuring that every student, regardless of ability, has the chance to pursue their dreams and aspirations. So mark your calendars, spread the word and join us! After all, when we embrace diversity and empower every student to succeed, there’s no limit to what we can achieve—together.
